Many WTC responders show early signs of heart woes

ATLANTA – Law enforcement officers who worked near ground zero after the World Trade Center attacks seem to show early signs of heart problems at a higher rate than would be expected for their age, a new study suggests.

Nearly half of about 1,200 law enforcement workers who went to Mount Sinai Medical Center's program in New York to monitor medical effects from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack showed some impaired heart function on ultrasound tests. The study was released Saturday at an American College of Cardiology conference.

"This is the first study to suggest a potential link between exposure to ground zero and early preclinical heart abnormalities," said Dr. Lori Croft, who led the work. Inhaling dust particles that can cause lung and heart disease may be to blame, she said.

The finding has many caveats. Researchers did not verify workers' presence at the site, and they do not know how many may have had pre-existing heart problems. Nor is there any comparison to other New Yorkers, or to police in other urban areas exposed to pollution and similar job stress.

"This could be an occupational find, or I might even have this problem because I live in New York City," Croft said.

Sicker workers also are more likely to seek testing than others who feel fine, making the portion found to have heart problems seem bigger than it may really be. The study was funded by the Fraternal Order of Police, which has encouraged workers to get suspected health issues checked.

The exams were done from January 2008 through June 2009. The study was limited to workers 40 to 50 years old because heart problems become more common after 50, Croft said. Workers with high blood pressure or heart valve problems were not included.

Among the rest, 47 percent had some degree of diastolic dysfunction — meaning the main pumping chamber of the heart does not relax properly between beats, so the heart can't fill with blood as it should. Only 7 percent of people in their 40s in the general population have this problem, Croft said.

"People that are 40 years old shouldn't have diastolic dysfunction. It means something. I don't know what it means," she said.

Previous research tied exposure to dust at ground zero to lung problems, asthma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Jeffrey Hon, World Trade Center health coordinator for the New York City Health Department, said a city-appointed panel regularly reviews published research on health effects attributed to the attack. A registry kept by the city and the federal government is tracking the health of 71,000 people exposed to dust from the disaster.

"We're interested in looking at all studies," but each has strengths and limitations, he said.

The study follows Thursday's announcement of a settlement that could pay up to $657.5 million to more than 10,000 ground zero rescue and recovery workers. To collect, workers would need to prove they had been at the site or other facilities that handled debris, and give medical records backing their illness claims.

On Monday morning, we are setting up Camp OUT NOW on the lawn of the Washington Memorial. I have chosen to partake in this because for 9 years we have tried to use the "system" to bring truth and accountability for the 9/11 attacks, and the "system" does not work.

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but 9/11 is not being allowed in the courts. So I don't know what option is left. Part of 9/11 Truth is being anti-war. That's part of the reason we do what we do... or at least I've always thought it to be the case. That we are trying to end the "9/11 wars" by exposing the truth. I can't think of a better place for 9/11 Truth to be than an event designed to end the wars. Knowledge is, after all, power. So... I will be using my knowledge of 9/11 to help end these hideous and illegal wars. We have too much blood on our hands to do nothing.

I hope that you will tell your friends and family to support what it is we are trying to do. 9/11 Truth will be represented at Camp OUT NOW. Cindy has already told me I will be speaking. Please come if you can, but more importantly, don't let people forget we are out there. Please.

The hospital's patients — or convicts — are in a state of denial, refusing to recognize the reality of their gruesome crimes. When it comes to the crimes of 9/11, America seems like "Shutter Island."

At a 9/11 conference held Feb. 19 in San Francisco, the consensus view presented was that those who swallow the government's view of the attacks are denying reality. Several speakers at the gathering, organized by Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, explained with powerful evidence and images how the three World Trade Center towers most certainly collapsed with the aid of explosives.

As a member of the Diet's Upper House and as director general of the Democratic Party of Japan's International Department, I wish to comment on the circumstances of The Washington Post editorial "Poisonous thinking in Japan," which The Japan Times published on this page March 10. [The editorial referred to my ideas about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as "bizarre."]

On March 3, Washington Post editorial writer Lee Hockstader visited me for an interview — requested through the Foreign Press Center — on Japan's attitudes toward immigration. The requested interview time of one hour was spent discussing the current situation relating to Japan's response to immigration and my opinions on this issue. Hockstader typed my comments into his laptop computer as he had requested.

After the interview ended and Hockstader closed his laptop, he mentioned that he had noticed from my resume that I had raised the issue of the 9/11 terror attacks in a Diet committee and asked whether I had some doubts about this issue. In response, I explained the circumstances that had led me to become involved in the 9/11 issue and pointed out a number of points that remained unexplained about the events of that day. I assumed that this question was separate from the interview just ended.

Although this was an informal chat regarding 9/11, at no point did I draw the conclusion that 9/11 was a conspiracy. I clearly stated I had never concluded that the collapse of the Twin Towers had been a result of a controlled demolition. Rather, my speech in the Diet had emphasized that it was necessary to investigate the origins of the "war on terror" from the perspective of assisting the relatives of 9/11 victims, and in relation to the war in Afghanistan and the provision of humanitarian assistance.

I have worked for many years to serve as a bridge between Japan and the United States, including by providing assistance to former American POWs held captive by Japan. I currently serve as senior director of the Research Committee on International Affairs and Global Warming Issues in the Upper House, but I was introduced in the editorial as "head of the Research Committee on Foreign Affairs." The editorial also describes me as a "Brahmin in the foreign policy establishment" of Japan when, in fact, I am not involved in policy matters.

I find it regrettable that this kind of biased article should be published in The Washington Post.

This week, ABC's Nightline televised an excerpt from an interview with Lee Hamilton, former vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission. The purpose of the interview excerpt was to suggest that those who produced the official reports of what heppened on 9/11 are willing to openly examine all evidence related to those crimes. Since I've met with Mr. Hamilton privately before, I exchanged a few messages with him to follow-up on my previous attempts to get him to examine the evidence in a public forum.

Now that you have publicly claimed your desire to discuss the evidence in public, I would once again like to offer you the opportunity to have such an open discussion with me. This week you said to the American people, on ABC Nightline, that if evidence was available -- "let's examine it." Now you're saying that you will not examine the evidence. Why the sudden change, and will you correct your comments for all to hear? Will you make it clear that you have been presented with multiple opportunities to examine the evidence publicly but have declined in each case?

As FBI agent Coleen Rowley told ABC last weekend, belief has nothing to do with it. If it did, then the attached list of over 1,000 licensed architects and engineers, who are calling for a new investigation into the destruction of the WTC buildings, would be enough. There are more building industry professionals on this petition than were involved in creating the NIST report, and these people are risking their careers instead of getting paid as was the case with NIST and the 9/11 Commission.

I've spent years presenting information in public only to find that mainstream media sources defer to the opinions and beliefs of authoritiative people like yourself. For example, two years after I was fired for publicly questioning the NIST draft report, you did an interview with CBC and said that the reason the WTC buildings fell was due to "the super-heated jet fuel melting the steel superstructure." This explanation was not only completely wrong, but was several false stories behind the curve. When authoritative opinions and beliefs about 9/11, like your own, are found to be egregiously wrong, the public is directed to another explanation that also turns out to be false. Meanwhile the many American citizens that are crying out for answers (over one third of the nation according to a 2006 Scripps-Howard poll) are ignored or ridiculed, and many Americans continue to die in the "War on Terror."

Won't you please reconsider and take the opportunity to meet with me publicly? As two lifelong Hoosiers who have spent years on this issue, and who both have deep concern for our own people, we owe it to our community to seriously and openly examine the evidence.

And thankfully, he does not disavow 9/11 truth in this letter, just the ad hominem nature of the hit piece against him.

An inflammatory and partial view of a Japanese statesman

I would like to correct the erroneous stance taken by your The Post's March 8 editorial "Poisonous thinking in Japan."

First of all, I am not the head of the foreign affairs committee in the House of Councillors, as the editorial suggests, but one of the six directors (not the head) of the ad hoc Research Committee on International Affairs and Global Warming Issues. Nor am I responsible for policymaking in my capacity as director-general of the International Department of the Democratic Party of Japan, as The Post implied.

Furthermore, I agreed to talk to The Post's writer in my personal capacity, regarding the agreed-upon topic of Japan's response to immigration, and he agreed that the opinions I expressed were my own and not party or government policy. I find it disturbing that the writer chose to use our informal chat after the interview in such an inflammatory way.

Above all, I strongly protest The Post's statement that my views exhibit a "profound distrust" of the United States and "reflect a strain of anti-American thought" in my party and the Japanese government. I have many American friends and have spent many decades endeavoring to serve as a bridge between the two countries..

I believe I am owed an apology for this attempt to damage my credibility by painting me with "poisonous thinking," "conspiratorial views," "intellectually bogus," "lunatic fringe" and "reckless and fact-averse," despite the fact that I had never stated "conspiracy" as such.

Former Minnesota governor and one-time professional wrestler Jesse Ventura has run afoul of the Huffington Post's no-conspiracy-theory policy, and he's not happy about it.

"I can't believe the Huffington Post today will practice censorship," Ventura says in astonishment. "I've got news for them. ... I won't ever write for 'em again."

Ventura had posted an item on Tuesday which took note of a recent conference at which "more than one thousand architects and engineers signed a petition demanding that Congress begin a new investigation into the destruction of the World Trade Center skyscrapers on 9/11." He also quoted a few paragraphs from his new book, American Conspiracies, to explain why some of those experts see signs of controlled demolition.

The item was featured on the front page of Huffington Post when it first went up, but after a few hours it vanished. All that appears now at its original location is an editor's note saying, "The Huffington Post's editorial policy, laid out in our blogger guidelines, prohibits the promotion and promulgation of conspiracy theories -- including those about 9/11. As such, we have removed this post."

The note is followed by three pages of comments, enthusiastically arguing the pros and cons of controlled demolition and other 9/11 theories, that were posted during the couple of hours before the entry was deleted and comments were closed.

Huffington Post's own guidelines for its bloggers state, "We must -- and do -- reserve the right to remove objectionable, inaccurate, or inflammatory material and, if necessary, suspend or revoke blogging privileges. This also includes propagating conspiracy theories and blogging about behind-the-scenes housekeeping issues that are not of interest to the general public."

Anastasia Churkina, a correspondent for RT, interviewed Ventura about the controversy. "He's a man who doesn't mince his words too much," she reported on Thursday. "He was pretty blunt."

"I can't believe the Huffington Post today will practice censorship," Ventura told her angrily. "They asked me to be a contributing editor and they said, 'Write about anything you want.' So it was the second time I did something -- and they removed it?"

"Well, I've got news for them," he continued. "I won't ever write for 'em again. ... I won't do a thing for the Huffington Post because I don't like it when people censor what I have to say."

"All I do is ask questions!" he exploded. "That's what bugs me about 9/11. 9/11 is an event you're not allowed to ask a question about. ... Clearly they don't want any questions on it."

Ironically, Ventura had to go to RT, the English-language version of a Russian news channel, to tell his story. Although polls show that large numbers of Americans believe in a broad range of conspiracy theories, and a majority entertain doubts about the official story of 9/11, few of those questions ever appear in the mainstream media.

As Raw Story recently reported , "In November of 2007, an online article noted, 'Nearly two-thirds of Americans think it is possible that some federal officials had specific warnings of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, but chose to ignore those warnings, according to a Scripps Howard News Service/Ohio University poll.' A national survey of 811 adult residents of the United States conducted by Scripps and Ohio University found that more than a third believe in a broad smorgasbord of conspiracy theories including the attacks, international plots to rig oil prices, the plot to assassinate President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the government’s knowledge of intelligent life from other worlds. The high percentage is a manifestation, some say, of an American public that increasingly distrusts the federal government."

Even liberal websites, however, discourage questions about 9/11, to the point where BooMan of the Booman Tribune had to preface a post at Daily Kos in 2005 by writing "I know this touches on verboten conspiracy theories, but this is a front-page NYT article."

"It's kind of hard to tell whether or not a new investigation will be launched," Churkina concluded. "Many people don't think this is going to be happening any time soon, even with such public figures, like Jesse Venture and other, calling for it."

On March 9, 2010 voters in the town of Richmond, New Hampshire became the second town in the United States to pass a resolution calling upon Congress to open a new investigation into the events of September 11, 2001. The first resolution of this kind was passed by the voters of Lincoln, Vermont in 2007.

The Vote For Answers resolution instructing New Hampshire’s congressional delegation “to pursue a new and independent investigation to address thoroughly all of the evidence and unanswered questions related to the event of September 11, 2001” passed 48 to 45 in Richmond (52% in favor).

To our disappointment seven other towns voted down the resolutions, though the overall percentage of votes in favor (in towns where exact results were recorded) was 23%. In referendums on social issues that depend more on values than awareness of the facts, 77% to 23% might be a landslide. However, because of the painful implications of 9/11 not being what we were told, and the media blackout on critical examination of the official 9/11 account, about 1 in 4 voters calling for a new 9/11 investigation is an accomplishment we can be proud of – it shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that questioning 9/11 is anything but fringe.

Among the four towns that have yet to vote, Barnstead will vote on Saturday, March 13, and Peterborough, Stoddard and Hanover will vote on May 11.

In addition to passing the resolution in Richmond and getting nearly 1 in 4 voters to vote in favor, Vote For Answers New Hampshire has garnered unprecedented local media coverage. The Keene Sentinel, Union Leader, Valley News, Brattleboro Reformer and Concord Monitor all published entire articles on the campaign prior to the campaign – with more coverage sure to emerge following the results. It has also been mentioned in countless other articles and letters to the editor throughout the region, including these articles in the Concord Monitor and Now! Hampshire.

Moving Forward

While devoting intense effort to getting the remaining resolutions passed in Barnstead, Peterborough, Stoddard and Hanover, the dedicated activists in the Monadnock 9/11 Truth Alliance and other parts of New Hampshire will use the foundation they have built to begin pursuing three new endeavors: 1) working with the Keene City Council and other City Councils to pass similar resolutions, 2) working with State Representatives to introduce a similar resolution in the State House of Representatives that would be voted on in early 2011, and 3) organizing to expand Vote For Answers New Hampshire to several dozen towns in 2011.

On the national front, NYC CAN will push forward with ballot initiatives in other states where voters can petition for non-binding resolutions to be on the ballot. In states where laws prevent voters from petitioning for non-binding resolutions, we will work with supportive elected officials to place resolutions on local ballots directly, without petitioning, or for city councils to pass resolutions on their own.

NYC CAN’s top ballot initiative priority is Boston, where a feasible sum of 3,600 signatures will allow for non-binding “public policy questions” to be placed on ballots in all 18 Massachusetts House of Representatives Districts located in Boston (200 signatures are needed per district). There are also opportunities to petition for resolutions in Detroit and in cities throughout Wisconsin, and a number of cities across the country present opportunities for city councils to place resolutions directly on the ballot.
